BOSASO, Somalia – Abdiaziz Afgudud, a candidate running for Puntland president, died today in a car accident that occurred between Bosaso and Qardho cities, officials said.
The presidential candidate along with many supporters and campaign organizers were heading to the city of Qardho, where preparations were being made to welcome him.
The police in Puntland confirmed that the car carrying the regional candidate overturned as it was traveling at a high speed in the Qayadsame area of the coastal Bari Region.
There were injuries suffered by some of those who were traveling with the candidate.
The deceased, a few days ago, landed in Bosaso town, where he announced his candidacy for the top position of Puntland ahead of the election slated for 8th January 2024.
His campaign slogan was “real change”. But his shocking death ended his dream of becoming the president of Puntland, a stable Federal State in northeastern Somalia.
In the last 15 years, the candidate died in a car accident and spent time in Mogadishu as he was a fierce critic of the president of Puntland, which led to his arrest several times.
