MOGADISHU, Dec 3, 2025 — Somalia’s Ministry of Planning and the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) on Wednesday held a high-level meeting in Mogadishu aimed at accelerating emergency assistance to drought-hit communities across the country, officials said.

The session, chaired by Planning Minister Mahamud Abdirahman Sheikh Farah — known as “Beenebeene” — brought together SoDMA Commissioner Mahamud Macalin Abdulle and senior officials from both institutions.

The two sides discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation and agreed to intensify coordinated relief efforts for communities facing severe water shortages and crop failures.

Participants also reviewed the underlying causes of the recurring drought, noting that both the Gu’ and Deyr rainy seasons had largely failed in many regions, deepening food insecurity and exacerbating displacement.

The meeting forms part of the government’s wider push to implement a cabinet directive ordering federal agencies to scale up rapid-response operations and strengthen preparedness in the face of worsening climate shocks, officials added.
