Somalia, Sweden Co-Chair Meeting on Women’s Empowerment in New York

NEW YORK — Somalia’s Director General at the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development, Mohamed Bashir Omar Ibrahim, and Sweden’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Andreas von Uexkull, jointly chaired a meeting in New York focused on advancing women’s empowerment in Somalia.

 

The event, organized by the Somali Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development, brought together representatives from governments and international organizations working on women’s development. Participants were attending the ongoing global women’s conference in New York.

During the meeting, Somalia presented progress made in improving the conditions of women, as well as challenges that remain. Officials highlighted efforts to strengthen legal frameworks and policies aimed at addressing issues affecting Somali women.

In an opening address, Ibrahim briefed participants on recent steps taken by the Federal Government of Somalia to tackle gender-related challenges, including the adoption of laws and policies designed to protect women’s rights. He also expressed gratitude to international partners for their continued support.

Representatives from participating countries and organizations commended Somalia for its efforts to promote women’s rights and development, describing the meeting as part of broader initiatives to enhance the role of women in Somali society.
