JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Somalia’s foreign minister said on Friday that the government and people of Somalia are closely watching the outcome of an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), following what he described as an Israeli violation of the country’s sovereignty.
Speaking at the OIC meeting in Jeddah, Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali stressed that the unity of Islamic nations must not be compromised.
“Today, Somalia is looking to the decision of the OIC member states,” Abdisalam said. “The national unity of all Islamic countries is sacred and must not be violated.”
The remarks come amid growing diplomatic tensions within the Islamic bloc over issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity involving member states.
Meanwhile, Palestinian Foreign Minister Farseen Ajaabikiyaan reaffirmed his country’s full support for Somalia’s unity and sovereignty, saying Palestine strongly rejects Israel’s actions.
“The State of Palestine fully supports the national unity of Somalia and firmly opposes the violations committed by Israel against the unity and sovereignty of OIC member states,” he said.
The OIC, which groups 57 Muslim-majority countries, convened the emergency session to discuss the issue and potential collective responses.
