MOGADISHU, Somalia — The head of Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim Abdille, met Monday with the UN’s top humanitarian coordinator in Somalia, Georg Conway, to discuss emergency preparedness amid growing concerns over potential drought during the upcoming Deyr rainy season.

The meeting, held at SoDMA headquarters in Mogadishu, focused on contingency planning in case of below-average rainfall, which could trigger severe drought and worsen conditions for already vulnerable communities across the country.

Officials also discussed joint efforts to mobilize funding both locally and internationally. The recently established National Humanitarian Fund, managed by the Somali federal government, was highlighted as a key mechanism to streamline aid delivery and support those most in need.

In a joint statement following the meeting, both sides agreed to prioritize assistance for the most vulnerable populations and strengthen coordination between the Somali government and international humanitarian partners.

“Ensuring timely and effective delivery of aid to hard-to-reach areas is essential as climate-related shocks continue to threaten lives and livelihoods,” the statement said.

The monthly coordination meeting is part of ongoing efforts to bolster Somalia’s capacity to respond to humanitarian crises driven by climate change, conflict, and displacement.
