Mogadishu, Somalia, July 1, 2025 – Elite Danab commandos of the Somali National Army (SNA) carried out a special operation late Monday night in Yuumbis village, located seven kilometres northwest of Bariire in the Lower Shabelle region, the Ministry of Defense said Tuesday.
The overnight raid targeted suspected al-Shabaab militants operating in the area, though the SNA has not released official casualty figures or confirmed arrests.
“The operation was aimed at disrupting terrorist activities and ensuring the safety of local communities,” a military official told Radio Shabelle on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorised to speak to the media.
The Lower Shabelle region has long been a hotspot for insurgent activity, with Somali forces, backed by international partners, stepping up military pressure on al-Shabaab in recent months.
