Somalia’s Embassy in Kenya Marks 65th Anniversary of National Independence

NAIROBI, June 29, 2025 – The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya on Saturday commemorated the 65th anniversary of Somalia’s Independence Day, marking the historic liberation of the Somali territories on June 26, 1960.

 

The event, part of the broader Independence Week celebrations, was attended by over 100 ambassadors and diplomats from various embassies and consulates across Kenya. Senior officials from United Nations agencies including UN-Habitat, UNDP, and UNHCR were also present, underscoring the international community’s recognition of Somalia’s strategic partnerships.

Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, praised the strong and growing bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries. He highlighted progress made in security, trade, education, and economic cooperation.

“Today’s commemoration not only honors the courageous struggle for our nation’s freedom but also offers an opportunity to reflect on the diplomatic achievements and strengthened ties with our neighbors, particularly Kenya,” Ambassador Jibril said in his remarks.

The embassy emphasized that such events play a crucial role in reinforcing diplomatic relations and enhancing Somalia’s image on the global stage.

The ceremony featured cultural performances, traditional music, and a visual presentation celebrating Somalia’s history and independence struggle.
