Somalia’s Internal Security Minister Meets AU Special Representative in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Aug 16, 2025 – Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Gen. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), on Saturday held talks in Mogadishu with the African Union’s Special Representative to Somalia and head of the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene.

 

The AU delegation, which included senior AUSSOM officials, discussed the country’s overall security and political situation, with a focus on ongoing operations against al-Shabaab insurgents.

The two sides also reviewed progress made in stabilizing areas recently recovered from militant control.

During the meeting, both parties stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the Somali government and AUSSOM in the fight against terrorism.

They emphasized the need for sustained international support to maintain gains achieved on the ground.

At the end of the talks, Ambassador Diene praised Somalia’s efforts to liberate territories from extremist groups, hailing recent security operations as a major step towards lasting stability.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace and state-building efforts.
