BOSASO, Aug 3 – The President of Somalia’s Northeast Administration, Abdulkadir Aw Ali Firdhiye, officially signed the region’s new constitution last night, marking the final stage in the local government’s legislative process.
The new constitution is described as strengthening internal governance, justice systems, and the protection of citizens’ rights, according to a statement from the new Federal State.
President Firdhiye said the constitution symbolizes unity, order, and progress, and that it will become the legal framework governing all residents of Northeast Somalia.
The document outlines the administrative structure, powers of government institutions, and the management of elections and public services. It also includes provisions safeguarding local culture, religion, and the rights of women and children.
Local politicians view the constitution as the culmination of years of effort to establish a formal legal foundation for the administration. It is seen as a key milestone in Somalia’s federal system, reflecting the unique environment, traditions, and circumstances of the Northeast region.
Local communities have welcomed the constitution with optimism, expressing hope that it will lead to transparent governance, justice, and inclusive representation.
Puntland and Somaliland rejected the news of the announcement of a regional state in Las Anod, as both sides claim the territory of the Sanaag region, which has become the flashpoint of the rift.
