Somalia’s Parliament Delay Opening of 7th Session Amid Political Tensions

Mogadishu — Some members of Somalia’s House of the People have been informed that the opening of the 7th parliamentary session, originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed.

The delay follows a request from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is reportedly preparing to embark on an overseas trip. Sources indicate the session will convene upon his return.

The 6th parliamentary session was closed on June 22, with plans to reopen on August 22, but this did not materialize.

Unconfirmed reports suggest concerns over potential political instability linked to Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s government have influenced the decision to postpone the session, aimed at easing growing tensions.

In recent weeks, momentum has built behind a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Hamza, initiated by several members of both houses of parliament.

The prime minister’s administration, backed by President Hassan Sheikh and the parliamentary leadership, is actively working to counter the motion, which threatens its survival.

Some parliamentarians supporting the motion told the media that it has reached an irreversible stage and will not be withdrawn.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has led the federal government for more than three years without facing significant parliamentary opposition until now, leading critics to accuse the current parliament of a lack of accountability and ineffective performance.
