MOGADISHU – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired a high-level conference on the funding of the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), calling for sustained international financial backing to bolster the country’s security and stability.
The meeting, jointly organized by the Federal Government of Somalia and the African Union, brought together international partners and donors focused on mobilizing resources for AUSSOM, which supports Somalia’s efforts to counter insecurity and build national institutions.
President Mohamud emphasized the critical importance of consistent financial assistance to strengthen the Somali National Army and ensure long-term peace and sovereignty in the Horn of Africa nation.
“The pathway to stability and self-reliance requires a well-supported national security framework,” the president said, urging the international community to maintain its commitment to Somalia’s progress.
During the conference, Somali authorities and their international partners presented detailed financial plans for the AUSSOM mission and discussed mechanisms for ensuring reliable funding, including a budget support framework for the AU-led operation.
The AUSSOM mission is intended to replace the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), as Somalia gradually assumes full security responsibility by the end of the transition period.
