Somalia’s President Visits  Eritrea for High-Level Talks With Afwerki

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accompanied by Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, has set off for Eritrea in a diplomatic mission aimed at reinforcing ties between the two Horn of Africa nations. The visit, beginning Thursday, is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing economic, security, and cultural exchanges.

 

In Asmara, President Mohamud will hold discussions with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on a wide array of issues. The focus will be on bolstering cooperation to counter regional threats, notably from groups like Al-Shabaab, which pose significant security risks across the region.

The talks are expected to delve into joint strategies for combating these threats, possibly including coordinated military actions or intelligence sharing. Additionally, Foreign Minister Fiqi has hinted at discussions on broader regional stability, maritime security, and geopolitical dynamics affecting the Horn of Africa.

President Mohamud’s engagement with Eritrea is strategically aimed at leveraging Eritrea’s stability for Somalia’s benefit, promoting peace and development amidst Somalia’s long-standing strife. The visit represents a concrete effort towards building a more stable and prosperous region through enhanced bilateral relations.
