BAIDOA, Somalia — In a show of unity and a push for stronger federal-state ties, Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre touched down in Baidoa on Thursday. He was greeted with traditional Somali songs, dances, and cheers from a large crowd assembled at the airport, including Southwest State President Abdiaziz Laftagareen, various local officials, and enthusiastic residents.
The visit marks a significant moment as it aligns with the sixth anniversary of the founding of Southwest State, one of Somalia’s federal member states. The celebrations are not just a commemoration but also a platform for dialogue on vital issues facing the region and the country at large.
Prime Minister Barre’s schedule is packed with events aimed at reinforcing federal-state collaboration. Discussions are expected to delve into the complexities of security, governance, and resource sharing, which are perennial challenges in Somalia’s journey towards stability and development.
“The goal is to strengthen our partnership for the progress of our people,” Barre stated shortly after his arrival, emphasizing the importance of unity in tackling issues like Al-Shabaab insurgency, which has significantly impacted the region.
The agenda includes a series of meetings with local leaders, participation in the anniversary celebrations, and visits to development projects. Security is a top priority, with both federal and local forces on high alert to ensure the safety of all attendees amidst ongoing threats from militant groups.
The anniversary itself will feature cultural performances, speeches, and a parade showcasing the state’s progress over the past six years, including achievements in education, health, and infrastructure.
President Laftagareen expressed optimism about the outcomes of the visit, noting, “This is more than a celebration; it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to work together for peace and prosperity.”
The visit by Prime Minister Barre to Baidoa is seen by many as a step toward mending past frictions between federal and state governments, fostering an environment of cooperation that could pave the way for more effective governance and security measures across Somalia.
