MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s elite special forces units, known as DANAB and Gorgor, successfully neutralized 15 Al-Shabaab militants and demolished several of their hideouts near Qaycad, in the Galmudug State, according to a statement from the ministry of information.

The operation, which took place in the pre-dawn hours, marks another significant military action against the Al-Qaeda-linked group Al-Shabaab, which has plagued Somalia with insurgency for years.

The special forces, trained with support from international allies including the United States and Turkey, have been at the forefront of Somalia’s efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s infrastructure and reduce its operational capabilities.

The Galmudug State, like other regions in Somalia, has seen frequent clashes between the national forces and Al-Shabaab, with the militants often using the area for hideouts and training bases.

This latest operation is part of a broader strategy to clear these regions of extremist presence, enhancing security and stability in central Somalia.

The Somali government has not reported any casualties among the national forces but confirmed the significant blow to Al-Shabaab’s ranks and logistics.

The destruction of the hideouts is seen as a strategic move to disrupt the group’s activities, including its ability to plan attacks and maintain control over territories.

This military success comes at a time when Somalia is also engaging in political reforms and economic recovery, aiming to stabilize the country post-conflict.

The operation in Galmudug State underscores the ongoing commitment of the Somali military, with support from its international partners, to eradicate the threat posed by Al-Shabaab and restore peace across the nation.
