HARGEISA, Somalia – The breakaway region of Somaliland has deployed more forces to Sool region’s eastern frontline in an effort to advance towards Goojacade base after losses.
Unprecedented military maneuver was reported in the region as tension heated up between Somaliland troops and SSC-Khatumo fighters, who gained the upper hand in the LasAnod war.
Somaliland forces were seen moving around Oog military bases, where they planned a counter-attack aimed at recapturing Goojacadde located outside LasAnod city, per residents.
The situation was reported to be worsening and both sides are making preparations for a fresh round of battle that could lead to further displacement in the war-torn Sool region.
Since February 6, when the fighting in the disputed city of Las Anod started, Somaliland forces have been in retreat mode, losing major bases and key areas to the local fighters.
According to data received from hospitals in Las Anod, the death toll from the bloody conflict exceeds 1,000, with thousands more injured and more than 900,000 displaced, some crosses into Ethiopia.
Somalia’s international partners have consistently shown dismay over Somaliland’s handling of the conflict and the reported shelling of civilian areas and infrastructure in Las Anod.
