Somaliland Reaffirms Commitment to Ethiopia Maritime Deal Amidst Somali Opposition

HARGEISA, Somalia — President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland has reaffirmed his commitment to a controversial maritime agreement with Ethiopia, despite opposition from the government of Somalia.

The deal, which involves leasing part of Somaliland’s coastline for a naval base, was signed earlier this year but has stirred significant regional contention.

Speaking at a recent public address, President Bihi did not specify a timeline for the implementation of the agreement. However, he emphasized that Somaliland is steadfast in its resolve to proceed with the deal, which he views as a pivotal step towards international recognition for Somaliland, a region that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by most of the international community.

The agreement with Ethiopia includes a provision for Ethiopia to recognize Somaliland’s sovereignty, marking a historic opportunity for Somaliland to achieve formal statehood. This aspect of the deal has been highlighted by President Bihi as a sign of progress towards receiving a broader international acknowledgment.

The maritime deal has faced fierce opposition from Somalia, which considers Somaliland as part of its territory. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has previously condemned the agreement, asserting that it violates Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Despite the external pressures, President Bihi’s statements underscore Somaliland’s determination to pursue its interests, with the maritime agreement seen as a strategic move not only for economic benefits but also for political legitimacy on the global stage.

The implementation of this deal could set a precedent for other unrecognized states seeking international recognition through strategic alliances.

This development continues to draw attention from regional and international observers, given its implications for stability and international law in the Horn of Africa.
