HARGEISA, Somalia – Somaliland has not yet given up on Lasanod, whose army was ousted at gunpoint earlier this year after the local people rejected the dream of secession.
Somaliland’s Ministry of Interior issued a statement announcing an invasion against Lasanood and Buhoodle under SSC-Khatumo. The threat raised the tension in the region.
The breakaway region in northern Somalia lost the Goojacade military base last month after being defeated in a war against SSC-Khaatumo forces.
Since February this year, there has been a bloody war in the Sool region between the local people who have taken up arms to fight the Somaliland Army which has been in power since 2007.
The President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi, has been accused of massacring the people of Lasanood, where hundreds of people were killed in bombings, while nearly one million people were displaced due to the conflict.
Lasanod is now free, and a new administration has been established which is called SSC-Khatumo. The new state is holding many prisoners of war. Two critically injured prisoners were released yesterday and taken to Hargeisa after the ICRC mediated their release.
