LAS ANOD, Somalia – Las Anod gets back to the spotlight and once again Somaliland is accused of a military build-up in Sool which deepens the risk of an attack on the city.
In recent days, Somaliland has been deploying more troops to the front lines of the region with the aim of launching a counter-attack to recapture the Goojacade base near LasAnod.
The Ministry of Defense of Somaliland said that the troops deployed to parts of the Sool region intend to take over areas that the northern breakaway previously controlled since 2007.
The head of SSC-Khatumo Abdulqadir Firdhiye dismissed the claim of President Bihi’s government that 600 terrorists entered LasAnod during the conflict as baseless propaganda.
Somaliland suffered a heavy loss to the SSC-Khatumo, including the Gojacadde camp on August 25, 2023, and they captured vehicles, weapons, and prisoners of war including Faisal Abdi Botan.
Human rights watchdogs have warned that further damage will result from the war if both sides do not exercise restraint and opt for genuine dialogue to end their differences.
More than 300 people were killed since the start of the war in February this year. The Las Anod general hospital has been hit at least four times since the fighting started.
MSF reported that the hospital was hit during fighting, causing partial damage to the structure and bringing a stop to activities in the pediatric ward and the blood bank.
