Mogadishu, September 24, 2025 – Two Somali government soldiers appeared before a military court in Mogadishu on Wednesday, accused of illegally authorizing surgery on a pregnant woman who later died from complications.

According to prosecutors, the soldiers signed consent forms for an emergency operation without being related to the patient or having legal authority to act on her behalf. The woman, who was in labor, reportedly died shortly after the procedure.

“The suspects impersonated family members and signed the surgical consent without proper verification,” a court official said. “Their actions directly contributed to the medical procedure that ended the woman’s life.”

The military court questioned the accused about their involvement and the circumstances surrounding the forged authorization. They are facing charges of false representation, abuse of authority, and complicity in a death resulting from negligence.

The case has sparked widespread outrage across Somalia, with citizens expressing anger on social media and calling for accountability in the country’s fragile healthcare system.

Many have demanded stricter oversight of medical procedures and legal safeguards for patients unable to speak for themselves.

The court has adjourned the hearing and is expected to deliver a preliminary ruling in the coming days.

This incident has become one of the most talked-about cases in Somalia this year, highlighting ongoing concerns over medical ethics, legal loopholes, and systemic failures in both healthcare and security sectors.
