Uganda says doesn’t support Somaliland secession from Somalia

KAMPALA, Uganda – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has said that his government does not support Somaliland’s unilateral agenda to separate from greater Somalia.

“We do not support the secession of Somaliland from Somalia because, strategically, it is wrong,” Museveni said in a statement posted on X [formerly Twitter] on Saturday.

People face similar challenges regardless of race and religion; hence, they should embrace the politics of interest, which is more important than the politics of identity.

“I agreed to take on the role of peace facilitator between the two,” he added.

A country’s internal market alone is not enough; therefore, Somaliland and Somalia need to unite, trade together, and trade with other African countries.

It is not the first country to oppose Somaliland’s independence. Many countries have already opposed it and called for Somaliland and Somalia to reunite and reconcile again.

The East African country was the first to deploy troops under AMISOM [now ATMIS] into Somalia in March 2007 to help the government in the fight against Al-Shabaab. So far, Uganda has provided all four AU Forces.
