LONDON, UK – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh on Monday co-hosted the Global Food Security Summit with UK PM Rishi Sunak in London.
In his keynote speech at the global food insecurity summit, he said Somalia is focusing on innovation and climate resilience as the country is facing currently a flood crisis.
“The UK’s commitment of £100M in aid is a commendable step towards global collaboration,” said the president in a statement post on Villa Somalia’s X handle.
For his part, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that the UK will start funding development projects, economic infrastructure, and agricultural development in Somalia.
The president went on to say that Somalia can be at the center of international efforts to eradicate hunger and ensure energy and agriculture which the people are in dire need of.
The president noted that the Somali army has taken over more than 70 villages and areas that are rich in agricultural crops, which Al-Shabaab has been in control of for some time.
The London Global Food security summit, a joint initiative between Britain, Somalia, the UAE, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is due to be attended by representatives from more than 20 countries.
