NEW YORK – The United Nations Security Council suggested that Ethiopia and Somalia resolve their differences through IGAD and the AU, as revealed by Amb. Meles Alem, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
Amb. Meles Alem told the press that Ethiopia has asked IGAD to call another summit to discuss the sea passage agreement last month that was angered in Mogadishu.
IGAD has not yet issued an official response to Ethiopia’s request.
On January 29, the Security Council held a meeting entitled ‘Peace and Security in Africa’, with Somalia requesting the meeting. However, the Council did not give any details about that meeting.
Somalia, based on Article 35 of the United Nations Charter, called on the Security Council to deal with Ethiopia’s intervention, saying that the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.
However, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Meles, clearly stated the position of Ethiopia during the meeting of the Security Council of the United Nations.
“Ethiopia’s position is that its efforts to access the sea are driven by economic issues. It is also about regional integration as well as a matter of peace and security.
This is the clear agenda that Ethiopia repeated at the Security Council meeting,” said the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Meles.
