MOGADISHU, Somalia — The United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) was officially launched today in Mogadishu, marking a significant shift in the approach to support Somalia’s journey toward peace and development.
The event was jointly led by James Swan, the Acting Special Representative of the United Nations, and Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi.
UNTMIS will carry forward the tasks previously handled by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) but with a new focus on transitioning these responsibilities to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the UN Country Team.
This transition is planned to occur in two one-year phases, with the process expected to be completed by October 31, 2026.
The launch was attended by key figures including Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Hosh, Information Minister Daud Aweis, other senior government officials, and representatives from international partners and local civil society organizations.
This collaborative effort underscores the international community’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts.
