MOGADISHU, Somalia [SMN] – At least two people have died and several others wounded on Saturday in a bomb attack on a police station in central Somalia.
Saturday’s explosion, a witness said, was an explosive device concealed in a tea shop within the station in Baladweyne town, some 335km north of the capital Mogadishu.
He says the mayor of Feerfeer town, Khalif Garaad Roble, and a female police officer had died in the explosion while the town’s police chief colonel Mohamed Qorshel and other soldiers were also wounded.
Rescue workers evacuated the victims into a hospital in the town. Al Shabab group has claimed the responsibility for the explosion.
The al Qaeda linked group has been waging an insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.
The group carried out deadly bomb and gun attacks on Somali and AU army bases in the south and central regions.
The militant group was ousted out of the capital in 2011 but still holds large rural swaths in the south and central of the war-ravaged nation.
