Jubaland state leader holds talks with SSC elders on LasAnod conflict

MOGADISHU [SMN] – Jubaland State President Ahmed Madobe held a meeting with the leading SSC traditional leaders who are currently in Mogadishu for talks on LasAnod peace.

 

Madobe said he listened to the elders’ views on the solution to the war in the Sool region and efforts for mediated dialogue with Somaliland, which has offered an olive branch.

The elders of all sides involved in the mediation, including Somali President Hassan Sheikh who appointed ex-Galmudug leader Abdikarim Guled as his envoy for Somaliland talks.

The elders briefed Somali leaders on the current situation, the problem, and the life challenges faced by the local people as a result of the ongoing war in the northern region.

President Madobe was accompanied to the meeting by the Second Deputy Chairman of the Upper House, Government Ministers, and Members of both Houses of the JFS Parliament.

The LasAnod war began on Dec. 2022 after the murder of politicians, including Abdifatah Abdullahi Abdi unknown attackers, sparking anti-Somaliland protests across the city.

The escalating conflict in Las’anod is yet another crisis facing Somalia, a country already grappling with a severe drought that affected more than 8 million people, per the UN.

As many as 200 people are dead and thousands were wounded in the war while many fled from their houses, some crossed into Ethiopia.
