NEW YORK, USA – Somalia is competing for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, which if it wins, will remain in the top position until 2026.
The UNSC seat that Somalia is seeking is an allocated African seat and is particularly reserved for a country located in East Africa, according to diplomatic sources in New York.
On the 21st of October, Somalia asked the AU will allow Somalia to become an African candidate for the non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council 2025-2026.
“Somalia can be trusted to be a leader in the African peace and security agenda of the UNSC as well as in compliance with the principles and conventions of the United Nations in order to establish an international order peaceful, quiet, and prosperous,” said the Somalia mission to the United Nations.
The election for this seat, which is part of five non-permanent seats, will be held in mid-2024, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The winning countries will be among the ten countries that sit in the non-permanent seats of the Security Council, for a period of two years, from January 2025 to 2026.
The five seats are an African seat, an Asia-Pacific seat, a Latin American and Caribbean seat, and two seats for Western Europe and other countries.
Recently, Somalia gave up on Tanzania in the election of the president of the world parliament, which was won by the speaker of the parliament of Tanzania.
Somalia said that it has made an agreement with Tanzania to work with him on the seat of the Security Council to help Somalia succeed.
