WASHINGTON, USA – A city in the United States elected a female Somali-American as a mayor for the first time in history.
Nadia Mohamed defeated Dale A. Anderson by a majority vote became the mayor of St. Louis Park City in Minnesota, where Ilhan Omar was elected to join the US Congress.
Mohamed, who is 27 years old, also became the first person of Somali origin to win the mayoral election in the United States.
“This election, of course, is more important than we have ever known, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead our city,” Nadia told hundreds of her supporters.
The current mayor of St. Loius Park, who said that he will not run for the third time, supported Nadia after she announced her candidacy in April this year.
Nadia defeated rival close candidate Dale Anderson, a professor at the University of Minnesota, with more than 58% of the votes counted.
In 2021, Deka Dhalac became the first Somali to become the mayor of a city, after the city council of South Portland in the state of Maine chose her to be the mayor.
