MOGADISHU, Somalia – The UNOCHA has announced that it is working to evacuate about 2,400 people who were stranded in the flood-hit Luuq district of Gedo region.
Responding to a Somali government’s request, OCHA said that boats were sent to the town of Luuq to evacuate the people stranded there.
A report issued by the agency said that 1.17 million people have been affected by the rains in the country so far.
It also said that 334,800 people have been displaced from their homes, while there are 28 deaths, including 8 children.
Also, the agency said that 2,400 people are stranded in the flood waters.
Yesterday, Somalia’s disaster management agency announced that at least 29 people have died in the worst floods caused by the rains in the country.
The flooding in Somalia is part of a regional deluge linked to ongoing weather patterns known as El Nino.
The worst flooding to hit Somalia in decades has killed 29 people and forced more than 300000 to flee their homes, according to SODMA.
OCHA said Heavy rains and floods have now affected 1.2 million people and displaced 335,000 residents, who are currently facing a humanitarian crisis and in dire need of help.
Partners are providing urgent assistance & have sourced boats to evacuate the 2400 people trapped by floods in Jubaland. The situation is likely to worsen as more heavy rain is expected in the coming days.
