NEW YORK – To enhance security the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has been actively engaged in combating the extremist organization al Shabaab. With the support of community forces the African Union Transition Mission, in Somalia (ATMIS) and international partners the Somali security forces have launched a operation aimed at weakening al Shabaabs capabilities in line with the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2628.
In addition to efforts the FGS has intensified its counter strategy by implementing strict financial measures. This includes shutting down al Shabaab accounts to disrupt their funding sources. Furthermore concerted efforts are being made to challenge and counteract al Shabaabs ideology through coordinated counter narratives across government and media platforms. The objective is to reduce their influence and hinder recruitment activities.
Acknowledging the nature of addressing insecurity the FGS is prioritizing inclusive state building processes. This involves enhancing the governments capacity to deliver services establishing a foundation, for sustainable peace and prosperity while simultaneously addressing immediate challenges posed by extremist groups.
