ANKARA, Turkey – Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, met with his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, in Ankara on Thursday.
The two Ministers discussed issues such as the strengthening of relations between the two countries, regional security, and the fight against Al-Shabaab, according to a statement.
Following the meeting, Jama and Güler shared photos of the deal they inked, which is an important agreement related to the defense and economy.
“We have signed a historic agreement on defense and economy that will further strengthen the security of Somalia and the region,” said the Minister of Defense of Somalia.
Minister Abdulkadir thanked the Turkish government for its brotherly support for the people and the government of Somalia. Ankara trains units of the Somali military and police.
In late 2017, Turkey opened a military base [TurkSom] in Mogadishu, the largest in Africa which trains Gorgor soldiers, who are the elite unit of the Somali National Army [SNA].
Turkey is a key partner in security and development in Somalia, according to the FGS. In addition, Ankara provides scholarships to Somali students to study in Turkey.
