ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – The deputy Prime minister of Somalia Salah Jama held a series of meetings with foreign officials in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the AU’s 37th summit.
“Pleased to have met with the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix at the sidelines of the 37th session of the African Union,” said the deputy PM.
Jama added that he has engaged in insightful discussions covering security matters, including ATMIS drawdown, combatting Al-Shabaab, and advancing the state-building process.
The UN has been supporting Somalia in state-building and humanitarian for decades with its Office in Mogadishu providing technical back to the ATMIS troops in their withdrawal.
ATMIS – African Union Transional mission completed in December phase Two drawdown – Seven Military Bases transferred to the Government of Somalia, and two others closed.
In the first phase of the drawdown, which concluded in June, ATMIS withdrew two thousand (2000) troops and transferred control of seven (7) Forward Operating Bases to Somali Security Forces, as mandated by UN Security Council Resolutions 2687 and 2670.
