MOGADISHU, Somalia – Today, Benadir Regional Court has started the trial of Sayid Ali Moallim Daud, who was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife in the capital.

Mr. Da’ud set a fire on his wife, Lul Abdiaz, on January 26, 2024, and she succumbed to serious burn injuries on February 2, 2024, at Digfer Hospital, according to the police.

The defendant has been captured in the Mudug region, central Somalia this month while on the run from the justice. He and his late wife were both Mogadishu airport employees.

A police spokesperson, Sadiq Dudishe, said the suspect had gone to an area where there was heavy fighting between the government and the Al-Shabaab, which has controlled much of Somalia for 17 years.

The governor of Mogadishu’s Benadir district, Yusuf Husain Jimale, has promised that Luul Abdiaziz’s six children from a deceased husband will receive financial support but there are concerns the authorities are not doing enough.

“My daughter and her unborn child deserve justice. Their killer should face the full extent of the law,” stated Sheikh Abdazis, father of Luul emphasizing the severity of the crime and the need for a just resolution.

There is no specific law in Somalia against domestic violence which is on the rise currently.
