MOGADISHU, Somalia – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh bade farewell to İbrahim Mete YAĞLI, outgoing ambassador of Turkey, days after signing a 10-year naval defense deal with Ankara.
The President thanked the Ambassador for his contribution to strengthening further the strategic partnership and cooperation between Somalia and Türkiye which is stronger than ever.
“During your tenure here, Ambassador Sharan, you contributed immensely to the intensification of relations between our two countries for which we must highly commend you,” the president said.
During the Ambassador’s tenure, both governments attained a new level of vitality in Somalia-Turkey relations, exploring and breaking new grounds for strategic partnership cooperation based on mutual respect, and in the interest of both countries and peoples.
Turkey and Somalia early this month signed a significant defense and economic cooperation agreement. Under the 10-year pact, Turkey will help defend Somalia’s long coastline and also rebuild the naval forces of the fragile Horn of Africa nation.
The Ankara insider said establishing a naval base in Somalia would be consummate with Turkish forces’ posturing in the area, as Turkey could better supply its Mogadishu base and help better coordinate its military forces.
