MOGADISHU, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh of Somalia on Friday presided over a ceremonial reception for the Oruç Reis, a seismic research vessel from Türkiye, which docked in Mogadishu to aid in offshore oil exploration. The arrival of the vessel marks a significant step in Somalia’s efforts to explore and develop its oil and gas potential.

President Hassan Sheikh, speaking at the reception, underscored the importance of this venture for Somalia’s economic development. “This is not just a vessel; it represents our country’s leap towards energy self-sufficiency and economic prosperity,” he said.

The presence of the Oruç Reis in Somalia’s waters is part of a broader strategic partnership between Somalia and Türkiye, which encompasses not just energy exploration but also includes military cooperation, infrastructure development, and humanitarian aid.

No specific details were released regarding the timeline or the extent of the exploration operations, but the move is seen as a positive development for Somalia, which has struggled with poverty and instability but holds promise due to its untapped natural resources.

Türkiye’s involvement in Somalia’s oil exploration could potentially lead to new discoveries, boosting the East African nation’s economy and providing Türkiye with a strategic foothold in the region.

Both countries view this collaboration as mutually beneficial, aiming to enhance Somalia’s energy sector while strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.
