MOGADISHU, Somalia – A team from the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has concluded a significant training stint in China, aimed at bolstering the capacity of its officials in disaster risk management and emergency response.
The training, which took place over 15 days, was part of an international collaboration that included participants from Egypt, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
The workshop, held in various cities across China, provided hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge on managing natural and man-made disasters. Chinese experts shared insights into their nationally acclaimed systems for disaster preparedness, which have significantly reduced disaster mortality rates and economic losses over recent decades, as highlighted by posts on X from observers and participants.
“China’s approach towards disaster management, integrating community resilience with advanced technology, has been enlightening,” commented a SoDMA official upon return. “We’ve learned about their comprehensive national plans, which could serve as a model for our own disaster management strategies.”
The training sessions covered a broad spectrum, from the use of technology in early warning systems to practical drills in emergency response. SoDMA officials participated in exercises designed to simulate real-time disaster scenarios, enhancing their ability to coordinate effectively with various stakeholders during crises.
This international exchange not only equipped SoDMA with new tools and strategies but also fostered a network of professionals across continents who can share best practices and support in times of need. The collaborative spirit was evident, with one participant from Tanzania noting, “The diversity of our backgrounds has allowed us to see disaster management from different cultural perspectives, enriching our approach back home.”
The initiative comes at a crucial time for Somalia, which has been grappling with recurrent droughts, floods, and conflict-driven emergencies. The enhanced skills and international connections are expected to play a pivotal role in refining Somalia’s national disaster response framework.
SoDMA’s Deputy Director expressed optimism, stating, “The knowledge and relationships formed during this training will undoubtedly strengthen our nation’s resilience against disasters. We are now better prepared to protect lives and property, preventing or at least mitigating the impact of future calamities.”
This training marks a step forward in international cooperation for disaster management, showcasing China’s growing influence in global disaster risk reduction through capacity building and knowledge transfer.
