CEERIGAABO, Somalia  — Heavy fighting erupted in Ceerigaabo on Saturday between SSC-Khaatumo forces and Somaliland troops, with each claiming to have secured a victory in the skirmishes.

The confrontations came shortly after President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) announced a new cabinet that includes representation from the Sanaag, Sool, and Cayn regions, areas contested by both groups.

The clashes resulted in casualties and injuries, though exact numbers were not immediately available. The city experienced a blackout as the conflict intensified, disrupting normal life for residents. SSC-Khaatumo forces reported advances into several parts of Ceerigaabo, while Somaliland troops maintained positions to the north of the city.

Both sides accused the other of initiating the violence, with SSC-Khaatumo alleging that Somaliland forces attacked civilians, while Somaliland officials claimed they were defending against an incursion by SSC-Khaatumo.

The situation remains tense, with no immediate signs of a ceasefire. The outcome of this conflict could significantly impact the political landscape of northern Somalia, particularly in light of the new cabinet appointments aimed at fostering inclusivity and unity.
