MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Federal Parliament approved the creation of an Independent National Human Rights Commission on Saturday, a move hailed by officials as a significant milestone in strengthening accountability and justice amid ongoing challenges in the country.
Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi called the approval a “historic decision” that underscores Somalia’s commitment to human rights and institution-building. She said the commission reflects years of planning and effort to enhance oversight and protection for citizens’ rights.
“This is a proud moment for Somalia and its people,” Al-Makhzoumi said. “It sends a clear message internationally that we are dedicated to advancing human rights and reinforcing national institutions.”
The announcement follows Somalia’s active participation and achievements at the recent United Nations Human Rights Conference in Geneva, signaling a broader push by the government to elevate the country’s human rights profile on the global stage.
