Washington, United States — Two members of the US House of Representatives have called on the Department of Justice to investigate the citizenship of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who was born in Somalia, in what they describe as part of a broader review of naturalized Americans.
Representative Randy Fine (R-Fla.) urged the Justice Department to begin the inquiry with New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, whom he accused of violating citizenship laws, adding that Omar should also be scrutinized.
Fine claimed that “some people come to this country to destroy it,” and called for those who allegedly obtained US citizenship fraudulently to have it revoked and be deported.
Representative Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) backed Fine’s call, describing Mamdani as a “socialist threat” and insisting that Omar’s political positions — particularly her frequent criticism of US foreign policy — warranted a federal investigation.
Omar, a Democrat representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, fled Somalia during the country’s civil war and later resettled in the United States as a refugee. In 2018, she became one of the first two Muslim women ever elected to the US Congress.
The Justice Department has not commented on the lawmakers’ request for an investigation.
Omar’s office did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.
