MOGADISHU, Jan 21 — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a telephone conversation with his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation on regional issues.

According to the Somali presidency, the two leaders discussed ways to deepen ties between Somalia and South Africa, the overall situation in the region, and expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest, particularly security and development.

President Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s full support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, underscoring Pretoria’s commitment to backing Mogadishu’s state-building efforts.

The call comes as the Federal Government of Somalia has stepped up diplomatic engagement with regional and international partners, aiming to reinforce national unity, safeguard borders and enhance Somalia’s role in regional affairs.

Somalia has in recent years sought broader political and security cooperation across Africa as it continues efforts to stabilise the country and combat insurgency.
