MOGADISHU — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud celebrated Eid al-Fitr on Friday alongside members of the national armed forces and civilians in Gandarshe, a coastal area in the Lower Shabelle region, officials said.

The president extended his Eid greetings to the Somali people, describing the holiday as a symbol of unity, compassion and solidarity among Muslims.

During his visit, Mohamud reflected on his past memories of Gandarshe, a once-popular tourist destination, noting that the visible destruction of infrastructure in the area illustrated the impact of militant rule.

He directed government institutions to prioritize reconstruction and development of the area.

He also urged Somalis to maintain the positive values demonstrated during the holy month of Ramadan, including supporting national forces, assisting vulnerable communities and working toward the common good.

Mohamud called for continued prayers for peace, stability and prosperity in Somalia.
