MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud traveled to Djibouti City on Friday to attend the inauguration ceremony of Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, as political tensions and opposition-led protest preparations intensified inside Somalia.
Mohamud and his delegation were received at Djibouti’s airport by Djiboutian Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed and other senior officials, Somali state media reported.
The visit comes as Somali opposition groups step up political activities and organize demonstrations aimed at expressing concern over the country’s political situation and disputes surrounding the term of the current federal government.
Opposition figures have increasingly criticized the government over electoral issues and the direction of Somalia’s state-building process, raising fears of deeper political divisions in the Horn of Africa nation.
The growing tensions come amid renewed debate between the federal government and opposition leaders over elections and constitutional matters, with both sides trading accusations over the future political roadmap of the country.
