MOGADISHU, Somalia — Former Somali prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire has strongly condemned the arrest of young people said to be members of a group calling itself “Isbedeldoon,” who were detained in Mogadishu.
In a statement, Khaire described the arrests as an “abduction” and an abuse of civil liberties, accusing the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of carrying out repression and human rights violations.
“It is deeply unfortunate that President Hassan Sheikh’s administration continues to commit abuses and crimes, including the abduction of young people, the detention of journalists, the oppression of civilians and other acts that undermine governance and human rights,” Khaire said.
The former premier also said the current government had little time remaining in office and called on Somalis to prepare to “save the country” from what he described as a repressive administration.
The arrests come amid growing political tensions in Somalia, where opposition figures have increasingly criticized the federal government over political freedoms, elections and governance.
