MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama on Sunday chaired a bilateral meeting between the federal government and ambassadors from European Union member states supporting Somalia, officials said.
The talks focused on security, the completion of Somalia’s constitution, ongoing direct elections, economic development and broader state-building reforms.
Jama said parts of the country were holding direct elections in which residents of South West State were voting for their leaders, describing the process as a sign of Somalia’s democratic progress and efforts to establish an inclusive electoral system.
He also thanked the European Union for its continued support to Somalia, particularly in the areas of security, institution-building, economic development and the country’s democratization process.
