MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 23 — A Somali political figure has warned Türkiye against becoming directly involved in Somalia’s internal political disputes, saying unconditional backing for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud could worsen tensions amid an ongoing debate over the country’s electoral process and constitutional changes.
In a statement posted on social media, Dr. Mohamed Aden Koofi, a member of the Somalia Future Council Forum, said Somalia was passing through a sensitive political period marked by disagreements over the federal government’s mandate and the direction of future elections.
Koofi argued that any unconditional support for the Somali president risked escalating the political crisis, particularly as opposition groups continue to question the legality of recent constitutional amendments approved by the government.
“The situation will deteriorate further if our Turkish brothers continue insisting on supporting an individual whose term has ended and who remains in office unlawfully,” Koofi said.
He referred to disputes surrounding the presidential term, saying President Hassan Sheikh’s elected mandate expired on May 15, while recent constitutional amendments extended the presidential term to five years.
Koofi also urged Turkey, a close strategic ally of Somalia, to maintain neutrality and support an inclusive political process aimed at preventing further instability in the Horn of Africa nation.
The remarks come as debate continues in Somalia over the legitimacy of constitutional reforms and the electoral model the country will adopt in the coming years.
