Somalia signs African ocean science declaration at global oceans conference

MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Aden, took part in a side event held during the 11th Ocean Conference, where participants discussed strengthening marine science, research and ocean knowledge, the ministry said.

 

The meeting brought together Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, ministerial-level delegations, officials from the African Union and experts specializing in maritime affairs. Discussions focused on the importance of advancing ocean research and improving scientific knowledge to better manage marine resources.

Participants adopted a joint seven-point declaration in which governments pledged to reinforce policies supporting marine science and knowledge, while safeguarding the independence of ocean research and data, according to a statement.

Minister Ahmed Hassan Aden signed the African joint declaration during the event, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to promoting marine research, enhancing regional cooperation and ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 11th Ocean Conference, which has brought together governments, international organizations and experts to address challenges facing the world’s oceans and advance the sustainable blue economy.
