KISMAYO [SMN] – Al-Shabaab has launched a mortar attack on a Kenyan military base on Kudha Island in the Lower Jubba region.
Some of the shells reportedly struck inside the base, while others landed near the camp.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had fired at the base with 50 shells, inflicting heavy casualties on Kenyan forces.
Kenyan troops serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) responded with artillery shells after the attack.
The situation is calm this morning, and Kenyan forces and the Somali National Army are conducting heavy operations in Kudha Island.
