China, Ukraine Respond to Somalia’s Flood Appeal

MOGADISHU, Somalia — China and Ukraine have responded to Somalia’s request for help preparing for El Niño floods that could affect 3.5 million people.

Somalia’s disaster agency chief, Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, praised both countries, noting Ukraine’s response despite its ongoing war with Russia.

Britain and Denmark are among the countries Somalia is still awaiting responses from, Abdulle said, as preparations intensify for the anticipated floods.

The agency estimates that 1.2 million people could be displaced, with flooding potentially affecting 29 districts, including the capital, Mogadishu.

The Shabelle River poses particular concern, with Abdulle warning that flooding could threaten communities, destroy farmland and kill livestock across vulnerable areas.

He said the agency is coordinating with humanitarian organizations and government institutions to prepare emergency assistance before flooding begins, aiming to prevent delays in relief operations.

Abdulle also urged Somalia’s Air Force command to prepare aircraft for possible rescue operations and deliveries of emergency assistance to isolated communities.

The international response comes as Somalia prepares for a potentially severe humanitarian emergency, with millions of people facing the threat of flooding.

Somalia continues to face recurring droughts and devastating floods, leaving communities struggling to recover, rebuild livelihoods and prepare for further climate-related disasters.
