MOGADISHU, Somalia – The death toll from the floods caused by the Shabelle River in Baledweyne, the capital of the Hiraan region, is rising by the hour, according to reports.
About 8 people have been confirmed to have died in the flooding of the Shabelle River in Baladweyne town in the last 24 hours, according to the Baledweyne district administration.
The administration of the Baledweyne district also said that the flood had caused massive property damage and an exodus of displacement in the past few days.
The mayor of Baledweyne district, Nadar Tabax, said that the charity organizations were slow in dealing with the situation as people in the flood-hit town fled to Eel Jalle village.
Mrs. Nadar also demanded that immediate assistance be provided to the people of Baledweyne who were greatly affected by the floods.
However, Baledweyne neighborhoods were vacated by the families who have gathered on the highlands outside the city as the river water is overflowing hour by hour.
As many as 41 people died in Somalia floods, with the government with the support of aid agencies try to airlift food aid and tents to the people displaced by the water of the rains.
