Hassan Sheikh pays to courtesy call on ex-president Farmajo in Qatar

DOHA, Qatar – President Hassan Sheikh who is on a visit to Qatar on Monday paid a courtesy call to former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo in Doha, Qatari capital.

 

The president briefed his predecessor about the current security situation and war on Al-Shabaab in Somalia, where SNA and local clan fighters continue a year-long offensive.

The lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia and the debt relief were on the agenda.

The Doha meeting comes as Farmajo opposed Villa Somalia’s attempts to amend the country’s Federal constitution to move from a parliamentary to a presidential system.

In recent remarks, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accused supporters of the former president, who making social media posts revealing setbacks in the Al-Shabaab war.

Farmajo served as 9th president between 2017-2022. During the transitional period, he became a prime minister under the leadership of Sheikh Sharif [2009-2012].

One of the world’s poorest countries, Somalia’s governance structure, economic infrastructure, and institutions have been destroyed by civil war, the World Bank reports.
