Jubaland state says flood death toll climbs to 20, thousands displaced

KISMAYO, Somalia – Jubaland has announced that the number of people who died in the floods has increased as Jubba River burst its banks and poured water into riverine areas.

 

Aden Farah Garane, the director of the Ministry of Disaster Management of Jubaland state confirmed to the media that the death toll has reached 20 people while many are stranded.

According to Garane, about half a million Somali people fled from their villages around the Jubba River and they became homeless and faced a lack of food, calling for urgent aid.

“Floods have caused loss of life and displacement, while death has risen to 20 people, more than 100,000 families are stuck in their houses, roads that were cut off,” added Garane.

The director pointed out that the most hit areas are in the regions of Middle Jubba and Gedo, where the water destroyed the main crossing bridges of Bardhere and Burdhubo.

The current floods in Somalia hundreds of thousands of Somalis in Jubba, Gedo, Hiraan, Bay, Bakool, and other areas in central and northern parts of the Horn of Africa country.

The river and Deyr rain floods in Somalia have claimed the lives of at least 53 people and some missing since last month, according to the latest figures from the government in Mogadishu.
